Precipice Trail

Precipice Trail is a moderately trafficked trail that is located at Champlain Mountain near Bar Harbor. Precipice Trail features rugged no technical climbing with iron rungs with an open cliff face. The Precipice Trail connects to Orange & Black Path, Champlain North Ridge Trail, Beachcroft Path, Champlain South Ridge Trail, and Murphy Lane. This trail is not recommended for small children or people with a fear of heights. Precipice Trail is rated advanced.

This trail is closed yearly from March-August for peregrine falcon nesting season. For this reason, the team cannot provide a TrailView at this time. Please consult alternate resources if you intend to hike the Precipice.

  1. This trail is strenuous and has an element of danger. It features stunning views and a wonderful challenge, but is situated almost entirely on cliff faces. This trail should be given some time to dry after a rainstorm because it is slippery and quite dangerous when wet.

    People have died on this trail because they hiked it in flip-flops, sandals, or tennis shoes. It should be done ONLY in good hiking boots and only by an experienced hiker.

    All said and done, this is one of the most rewarding trails I’ve ever hiked.
